Roman Savchenko: Lets make the national team from Barys Astana!

21 Apr 2013 | Tomáš Salamon

Roman Savchenko, the fifth best goal scoring defender in the KHL last season, is also sharing the first place of defenseman scoring leader of the championship with Aaron Keller. He got four points for one goal and three assists in tournament, but the most important was the assistance to the winning goal in the game against Italy. After the game we talked to him about that goal and also about his satisfaction with the Kazakhs tournament result.

You achieved your goal and won the championship, so I guess that you are satisfied…

Of course, we were interested only in the first place. Unfortunatelly we lost with Hungary and had a little problem. There were two possible results of today. If we win, we are going to be first, or if we lose, we are going to play in the division next year which we did not want to. But we had caught our chance and made a great result.

After your shot on net Talgat Zhailauov scored the winning goal from the rebound. What can you tell me about that scoring situation?

We played the powerplay and had a chance to take a lead in game. It was good that we scored, because it was a big support for the team. That is obviously easier to play if you are leading than when you are loosing.

In my opinion you were the best defender of the championship. Did you feel yourself in top form?

I do not think, that I was the best, but if I was, that is not important for me. I am not interested in my personal success. I just try to do my best for the team.

Do you think that the team took the advantage from the fact that majority of players spent the whole year together in Barys Astana?

Of course! For the whole season we played in the one team. The time spent together is connecting us and in my opinion Barys should take all the players from the national team. We can make the national team from Barys Astana and have one strong team training the whole year together and taking advantage from it.

Do you think that the team is able to stay in A pool after the championship in Belarus?

Difficult to say, because you need to have a good luck for it too, but we are going to do our best to stay there.
