Sheffield Steelers front man Doug Christiansen has been named as the head coach for the senior men's GB team. The 35 year old will split his time between the Steelers and the GB squad. He was assistant coach under Tony Hand who resigned his position last month as head coach.
Christiansen began his playing career in the American and East Coast Hockey leagues, making the transition to the UK after a year in Italy in 2007-2008 as player/coach for the Edinburgh Capitals. Whilst in Scotland he won Coach of the year before making the move to Ireland and the Belfast Giants where he won the Elite League title in 2011-2012 and again Coach of the Year. Christiansen joined the Steelers organization this summer and will coach his first game 14th September away against Edinburgh Capitals his old Alma Marta.
"Being named as GB coach is the biggest honor of my hockey career. I am absolutely thrilled by my appointment. I would like to thank Tony Hand for all his efforts the last two seasons. I learned a lot from him and it was a privilege to work for him. Hockey in Great Britain is at a crossroads. It is my vision to help push GB forward building a world-class program. Our goals will be high. Our intent is to set a path that can be followed from the age of 16 to the top. I am excited about what we can achieve." Christensen said in a statement.
