Sweden's defender Alexander Edler has got his final verdict after his kneeing in the World Championship and he will miss the first two games in Sotchi.
Alexander Edler was sent of the ice with a match penalty after a kneeing on Eric Staal in the quarter finals of the World Championships in May. The hit inflicted a serious knee injury on Staal and Edler was suspended for suspended during the semi final and the final. Now the IIHF has decided that Edler will be suspended two games more, meaning that he will miss Sweden's first two games of the Olympic Games in Sotchi. The games against Switzerland and Czech Republic.
Sweden's General Manager Tommy Boustedt is not pleased with the decision "We think it was hard enough to miss two and a half game at the World Championship", he told Aftonbladet. "He had no intention of inflicting an injury". Boustedt also compared it with a similar hit from Canada's Ryan Getzlaf in 2012 that gave no suspension at all.
Sweden has not yet decided if they will appeal against the decision or not. But according to Boustedt the suspension will not harm Edler's chances of making the Olympic roster. "No I've talked to Mårts (Swedish head coach) today and this will not have any effect on the selection".
