Kovalchuk gets stoned in the shootout as Medvescak ends their losing streak.
KHL Medvescak 4 - SKA St. Petersburg 3 (SO)
After losing seven straight contests, Medvescak had to go up against the league's best team in SKA St. Petersburg. Just over a week ago, they started a road trip against SKA that resulted in a 3-0 loss, and that was without Ilya Kovalchuk on the active roster. Kovalchuk would return and make his mark early in this game by scoring the first goal. However, Medvescak would score three straight due to a strong power play and take a 3-1 lead into the third period. Demonstrating their offensive firepower, SKA scored two goals in the third over a 1:30 span to tie the game up. The third goal was a sniper's shot by Kovalchuk that went just past Dekanich's glove and into the net.
With no one scoring in overtime, the game went to a shootout. Linglet (Medvescak) and Cervenka (SKA) scored on their first attempts. Ryan Vesce would score on the Bears second attempt, putting the pressure on Kovalchuk to even up the score on penalties. Dekanich stopped Kovalchuk and would go on to shutdown Thoresen on the next attempt for the win.
SKA is now on a two game slide of their own, while Medvescak will try to take momentum into Thursday's home game against Ugra.
Traktor 1 - Sibir 0
Traktor pulled out a win in a grind-it-out game where they were held to just 20 shots on goal. Their productive second period was all they needed as Ryabykin scored the only goal on the game, with assists from Kontiola and Kostitsyn. 14 penalties were called in the game for both teams including a misconduct on Jan Bulis for a high check. Sibir dominated Traktor in the faceoff circles and shots on goal, but they just could not score despite seven power play opportunities.
Vityaz 3 - CSKA Moscow 2
CSKA has now lost two straight with their defeat at the hands of Vityaz. The game stayed close through the first period until Mezei scored for Vityaz on the power play with two minutes to play. CSKA would respond early in the second period as Radulov scored one of his own. This would start a busy second period with both teams getting the remainder of the goals in the game in the middle 20 minutes. Korolyov and Rozin would score for Vityaz, and Lyubimov would get the second goal for CSKA. Though Red Star was able to pull even during he game, they were never able to take the lead. Proskuryakov was pulled with nearly a minute left to help give CSKA a comeback chance, but Vityaz held on for the win.
The is no action in the KHL on Wednesday, 25.9 and action resumes with five games on Thursday 26.9.
