It's the 178th derby between the two clubs and the last season saw the Flyers loose 5 of the 6 appearances. The Flyers squad had a start into the season not many predicted and greet the rest of the league from the top.
It was the Lions who got the first goal of the evening after 4 minutes, with Ryan Keller as scorer. In the 5th minute it was the Lions who got the chance to play with a one-man advantage. This would only change a few seconds later as Ryan Keller charged Kloten’s Goalie Martin Gerber and was sent to the box to cool down. Shortly before both penalties were about to tick down, the Flyers were awarded a 2 minute penalty for hooking against Tommi Santala, the Top Scorer for the Team. It would only take 6 second for Kloten to score the equalizer. Felicien Du Bois scored on the Powerplay with Peter Mueller and Simon Bodemann adding assists.
Kloten was awarded another two powerplays, first Bergeron was sent to the Box and a little later it was Mark Bastl with a '2 + '2 penalty for high sticking. The Lions made it difficult for the Flyers, not letting them create many chances. The powerplay had almost ended when a goal had to go under video review and was given a good goal by Robin Leone who was called up for the game for injured Eric Blum.
The second period started with yet another advantage for Kloten but they weren't able to score. It was shortly after , when Ryan Shannon, assisted by Severin Blindenbacher scored to even the game 2:2. In the following minutes both teams had chances to score but Martin Gerber, as well as Lukas Flüeler did a good job, denying their opponents chances.
With less than 5 minutes to go, ex Kloten player and Calder Cup winner Roman Wick was thrown off his skates slightly too easy but got the advantage for his team but couldn't get another goal on the score board.
Shortly before the second period ended, Klotens Santala and Zurich's Kenins were sent to cool down early for roughing.
A slow start marked the beginning of the 3rd period and when the Lions where awarded a powerplay after a hooking penalty it was top scorer Luca Cunti who scored the leading goal. But guess what, powerplay Kloten and Micki Dupont, assisted by Peter Mueller and Tomi Santala scored the goal to even the score.
After that, both teams ran down the time with little actual chances to score the eventual game winner. And with only one and a half minutes to play, Coach Marc Crawford took a time out to gather his strongest players but the period ended with a goal on each side.
A 5 minute overtime in a 4 on 4 format (or an eventual shootout) would decide who'd walk away with the first derby win of the season. And Michael Liniger, interims Captain, had a first good chance but Flüeler stopped his shot. In the last minute both teams had chances but the crowd was in for extra hockey as the game proceeded to a shootout.
The Lions started with Roman Wick, but went scoreless on his attempt. Klotens Peter Mueller was successful and so was Aurelio Lemm. Patrick Bärtschi, Luca Cunti and Ryan Shannon (all ZSC) as well as Tomi Santala and Michael Liniger (Kloten) missed to score on their attempts.
