Is the 51-year-old legend Chris Chelios really coming back? According to some Finnish sources he might just do that!
Chris Chelios, everyone knows him by the name, currently a Senior Advisor to Hockey
Operations for the Detroit Red Wings with whom he spent a long time during his
wealthy NHL career is actively thinking about a comeback to active hockey. At
least some Finnish sources claim so.
Currently
51-year-old staff member of the Red Wings organization said in an interview for
a Canadian news agency he said that he is considering coming back to hockey.
Though the NHL is, of course, out of question.
Chris
says that if his sons, who currently build on their NCAA career, don't make it
to the NHL, he would accede playing with both of them together somewhere in
Europe. Switzerland arises as a possible destination, and he reckons he's fit
to play a bit in Europe.
Chris
started his career playing for the Moose Jaw Canucks of the SJHL for two
seasons and then switched to University of Wisconsin in the NCAA for
another two seasons, before being drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1981 as
a round 2, 40th overall pick.
Altogether
he wrapped up 1651 NHL appearances, scored 185 goals and added another 763
assists for a total of 948 points. Also he had 266 playoff games, 31 goals, 113
assist for 144 points.
Considering
international, he played 60 games for team USA scoring 14 goals and assisting
35 time for 49 points.
His
brightest NHL seasons were 1988/89 for the Canadiens and 1992/93 for the
Blackhawks when he recorded 73 points. He was also the assisting captain for
the Blackhawks before taking the role of the captain in 1995/96 season.
During
the 1998/99 season he's traded to the Detroit Red Wings, but from that point he
hasn't been scoring much as the glory days had passed. He played his final game
in the NHL in 2009/10 wearing Atlanta Thrashers' jersey, appearing in 7 games
but was left scoreless and was -2 on the ice.
Chris
was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012/13 season, had a lot of NHL
awards awarded to him including All-Rookie Team (1984/85), Best Defenseman
"Norris Trophy" (1988/89, 1992/93, 1995/96), Mark Messier Leadership
Award (2006/07) and the Stanley Cup Champion (1985/86, 2001/02, 2007/08).
He
fulfilled a lifelong dream when he became an Olympian in 1984, and was chosen
into the Olympic All-Star Team in 2001/02, but at the same games held in Salt
Lake City, Utah, USA, he was chosen as the Best Defenseman and won the silver
medal.
Interesting facts:
-Chris tried to play college
hockey, but found out he was to small; he went back home and put on 20
kilograms of muscle.
-He was 48 years old when he was
called up by the Atlanta Thrashers, the oldest player in the NHL at the time
and second-oldest of all time.
-He was the first American to be named
captain of the Montreal Canadiens.
