Asiago hosted Group D of the third round of the international club tournament Continental Cup. The Italian club managed to win all three games in PalaOdegar to qualify for the Super Final in Rouen January 10-12.
Asiago needed one point in the last game against Nottingham Panthers to secure the group win. They got all three, thanks to three power play goals. Stefano Marchetti and Andre Signoretti scored a goal each for the home team in the first period. David Clarke scored the first British goal 27 seconds before the first intermission. Clarke also tied it early in the second period. Layne Ulmer secured the Asiago win with a 3-2 goal at 37:06.
In their first two games Asiago was saved by its goalie Vincenzo Marozzi who made 41 saves in the 3-1 win over Yertis Pavlodar of Kazakhstan and then 45 saves against the Russian VHL side Toros Neftekamsk. Paul Zanette opened the scoring against Yertis and Keven Devergilio added the other two goals. In the 6-2 win over Toros the captain David Borelli got three goals, Sean Bentivoglio two and Layne Ulmer one.
In the other games Toros Neftekamsk beat Nottingham 4-3, Nottingham beat Yertis 2-1 and Yertis beat Toros 4-2. So while Asiago finished with a perfect record, the other teams got three points each.
Asiago's Christopher di Domenico scored no goals but still was the scoring leader of the group with seven assists.
The Super Final be played in Rouen, France January 10-12 and will besides Asiago include Stavanger Oilers who qualified from Group E, Donbass Donetsk and Rouen Dragons.
