A solitary goal by Jamie Benn and a great performance by goalie Carey Price send Canada in the final blanking USA. The long-awaited revenge of Vancouver 2010 smiles again to champions
Confirming Jonathan Quick and Carey Price in
the goal, Canada and USA anticipate the last final of Olympics in a great
atmosphere at Bolshoy Arena: top scorer and MVP candidate Phil Kessel needs 30
seconds to knock at Price door, but Canadian goal is reactive. But first
minutes are more Canadian with a constant pressure and the best chance with
Jeff Carter stopped by American defence. Parise calls Price for a save with a
medium range shot and so Carter on the other side. At 6 Carey is great in
blocking Carlson shot and then rebounding a Kessel’s try. Game is always
interesting and both goalies are decisive in keeping the score at zero. USA
survives the first power play despite good chances for Sharp and Crosby. Same
Pittsburgh Penguins start has another great chance at 14 but Quick rebounds.
USA waste a power play opportunity – out Marleau – at the end of period and
risk a lot when Kunitz well prepares a shot whistling Quick cage.

Jonathan Quick saves on Jeff Carter
Canada starts better the central period and opens the score at 21:41
Jamie Benn gets in US defence perfectly timed to deflect a smart pass from Jay
Bouwmeester with no chances for Quick. US goalie is reactive to avoiding Canada
second goal one minute after blocking a tentative from Marleau. Patrick Kane
has a capital chance at 30 but Price is great in rebounding and no one takes
advantage of the puck dancing in front of the goal line. At 36 is the time for Quick
to make a couples of great saves diving to avoid a lethal deflection by Benn
and then closing the door on Kunitz.
Also the last period sees Canada in the control
of the game, while USA tries to surprise with counter-attacks as at 44 when pokes
Price with Parise, on Kessel pass. Canada wastes a power play well played by US
defence, but has a great chance at 55 when Quick rebounds twice on Kunitz. The
game is not spectacular but the stakes is too high to make the game a show.
Without other remarkable chances, coach Blysma pulls Quick for the last minute
in a desperate siege. It will be Canada – Sweden

Game is over, the disappointment of US coach Dan Blysma
Ryan Callahan: "It seems like we had a
tough time sustaining any pressure in their end. They outnumbered us in their
zone, came up with it quick and, as we expected, they were quick on transition.
We wanted to try to get pucks behind their defence and create some
opportunities that way. I thought we did it early on, but they defended
well."
Jamie Benn describes the goal: "We were
just trying to grind them out down low. I got down in the middle, and I made a
pass back to the defence, and Jay Bouwmeester made a great shot-pass, and it
found a way in. Well, it's a credit to my teammates. We're pushing each other
in here, we want to get better each game, and I thought we played a pretty good
one tonight."
Carey Price was the star of the game:"Our
backchecking was excellent tonight, our forechecking was good. We were trying
to stay on the right side of the puck the whole night. The effort was there. We
knew that was a good hockey team over there and we just found a way to
win."
Ryan Suter: Tonight we lost against Canada because we didn't show up to play. It's kind
of frustrating. They're a good team. We sat back, we were passive. You can't
play scared. I thought we sat on our heels and just didn't take it to them at
all. We had motivation. We just didn't take it on the ice."
