A press conference organised by Swiss Ice Hockey and Sean Simpson on Monday morning confirmed the rumours being passed around since the weekend. The head coach will not extend the contract offered to him by Marc Furrer, president of Swiss Ice Hockey.
"I missed working with a club team, working on a daily basis. I've thought about this long and thoroughly and last week I came to the conclusion that I wanted to be a coach of a club team again. It's not easy for me to leave such a successful team. I had a lot of great moments with the national squad. My thank goes to all the staff of Swiss Ice Hockey, my players and team staff. It's important for me to mention that our ways part in friendship" said Sean Simpson.
Simpson will step down once the World Championships in Belarus have concluded. Swiss Ice Hockey has the task of replacing a coach who won the silver medal at the last championship. In his 5 years as head coach, Simpson missed the quarterfinals 3 times which puts everything into perspective but there's no doubt that hockey in Switzerland progressed under his leadership. The question is, who can replace such a personality who was able to bring out the best in the players. The rumour mill hasn't provided much information yet but Swiss Ice Hockey is working intensively on a plan to find a successor and will inform on a decision in due course.
As for Sean Simpson, his next station could well be in Mannheim (DEL) who seemed to have a high interest in the Canadian. In addition to the silver medal, Simpson already won the Champions Hockey League with the ZSC Lions, the Victoria Cup against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Spengler Cup and he won championship titles with Munich and EV Zug.
