Flyers-Davos 1st round 1/4-final

11 Mar 2014 | Andreas Reiner

After a 50 round, regular season warm-up, 3rd ranked Kloten and 6th ranked Davos meet again

Before the game started, Peter Mueller was honored as the PostFinance top scoring forward of the Kloten Flyers, he totalled 46 points. With this,
9'200 swiss francs will go to the junior teams of the Flyers.

Klotens mission had a miserable start as Marcel Jenni was handed a minor penalty for high sticking only 4 seconds into the game but the boxplay worked
well and the Flyers prevented an early goal on their side.  Minutes later, Kloten got anther chance to warm up their defense as defenseman Randegger was sent to the cooler for hooking but Davos couldn't profit from that powerplay. And with that, the game was launched as both Teams each handed out some face washes in front of Goalie Martin Gerber who had used the break from the olympic games to get back into shape.

Then with 8 minutes to play in the first period, it was Davos' turn to get some boxplay as René Back was given a minor for tripping and seconds later Kloten had a two-man advantage as Noah Schneeberger joined his teammate for hooking. In the 14th minute Matthias Bieber scored the first goal of the game, with assists by Santala and Von Gunten. After that first goal, the pace cooled down a little and the first period ended.

With the start of the second period both teams tried to step up the pace but neither squad was able to create noteworthy chances. Then Dino Wieser had a breakaway on the left side, playing the puck across to Dario Bürgler who just had to tap in the puck to equalise the game. Now the game had the speed that everyone expected, the puck being passed foward with one or two quick passes, creating chances on both sides. Dario Bürgler was then sent to the bench for hooking and the Flyers created some good chances but couldn't add another goal. In the 12th minute all of a sudden, Yannick Herren got a straight pass to his stick and only had goalie Genoni in his way but his shot went passed the goal.

Patrick von Gunten then was assessed with a '2 + '2 penalty for high sticking and Davos quickly had their powerplay formation built up. With the exception of a handful of shots, Davos couldn't create any dangerous scenes but 2 minutes before the end of the period the puck was just centimeters from the goal line but with some luck the Flyers were able to remove the puck and prevented the lead by Davos.

8 minutes were played as Micki Dupont was benched for hooking and this time, Davos didn't need a lot of time to burry the puck behind Gerber. Top scorer Marcus Paulsson executed a pass from Enzo Corsi to give Davos the first lead of the evening. With 8 minutes to go each team had a player benched which meant more space on the ice as the Flyers tried to score the equalizer. 5 Minutes to go and Kloten got another chance to play with a one-man advantage but managed to place only one shot on Genoni.

A time out by coach Felix Hollenstein gave his team some time to rest and bring on a 6th player for goalie Gerber. But with a shot from the blueline Davos forward Marcus Paulsson scored on the empty net.

Klotens scorers were nowhere to be found tonight, they'll need to show up fast if they don't want to end their season early. On the other side, Paulsson seems to have found his shape at the right time and was the game winner tonight.
