Switzerland upsets the US team, Russia beats Slovakia in OT, Canada prevails over Sweden and host Finland welcomes Denmark to the harsh reality of Junior A hockey.
Probably the biggest suprise of Day 1 was the 4:2 win of Switzerland over USA. For the states who've won the U18 tournament
six times during the last ten years this was the first loss against the swiss squad ever
Dougherty scored the first goal of the game in a powerplay after Rod was
sent to the bench for a Check against the Head. The swiss scored the game tying goal with 12 minutes played, Damien Riad was the scoring Forward but only 4 minutes later the US boys got the lead back as Kyle Connor scored the 2:1. The second period didn't
bring any changes on the scoreboard but the 3rd started with a furiou swiss team, Kevin Fiala got the second equaliser 46 seconds into the period. It took another 16 minutes for the next goal to be scored when Denis Malgin got the 3rd goal of the game. The US team
tried everything, also taking their goaltender Alexander Nedeljkovic off this ice for a 6th Forward but instead of the second US goal it was Malgin once more to score the empty netter.
Both Teams have one day off before the USA plays the Czech Republic and Switzerland meets Finland
Slovakia close to upset last years semifinalist Russia, looses 3:2 in Overtime
The crowd had to wait almost 16 minutes before they could celebrate the
first goal. It belonged to Yevgeni Svechnikov assisted by Nikolishin and Lyamkin but before the first period ended slovak defender Patrik Maier scored on a powerplay and tied the game. The slovaks started strong into the second period when Kristian Pospisil scored a
shorthanded goal to give his team the first lead of the game. Russia
reacted quickly as Kirill Pilipenko scored the 2nd goal while the powerplay was going
on. A goalless 3rd period meant that the game would go to overtime where
it was again Pilipenko only 22 seconds into the game to score the game winning goal assisted by Vovchenko and Lyamkin.
Slovakia will play their next game on good friday against Germany while
Russia will face one of the favourites, Sweden on Saturday.
Last years quarterfinalist Sweden looses to Canada 3:1

Söderström on a powerplay chance. It took the swedes 31 minutes to get
on the scoreboard as Gustav Forsling, assisted by Daniel Muzito and Axel
Holmström, got the puck past canadian goaltender Mason McDonald. Matt Barzal with the 3rd goal in the 4th minute of the last period decided the game as Canada won 3:1.
