While the first Shootout win of the Tournament goes to Sweden, Teams USA, Canada and Finland beat opponents in regulation and can prepare for the knock-out stage.
With a 3:0 win over the Czechs, USA get first win of tournament
A goal in the first period and 2 goals in period two sealed the win by the
US squad over the Czechs. Vitek Vanecek was beaten a first time in the 9th
minute by Auston Matthew, assisted by Jack Dougherty and Brandon Fortunato.
A goal just 58 seconds into the middle period by Forward Frank Milano who was assisted by
Jack Eichel and Alex Tuch and increased the score to 2:0. The US Team got on the scoreboard a third
and last time in the 25th minute when Kyle Connor got the puck passed the czech netminder.
The east europeans weren't able to react in the second or the 3rd period
where the US had 15 shots on goal while the Czechs amounted 5 shots.
Both netminders were voted to the best players of their team.
Germans keep score tied wide into the third period, then break down within 5 minutes against Canada
The germans started with Daniel Fiessinger instead of Florian Proske in
goal and were off to a good start. But it was the Canadian squad who got
on the scoreboard first when Daniel Audette, assisted by Jayce Hawryluk
and Ben Thomas scored. It took the German team 34 minutes when Andreas
Eder got passed Julio Billia who replaced Mason McDonald between the
pipes. It took the Canadians a little more than a minute to take the
lead when Connor Bleackley capitalised on a pass by Clark Bishop.
Germany kept on pushing and with 2 minutes go in the second period
Maximilian Kamerer scored the game tying goal. What then happened in the
3rd period can only be called a collapse, within the 55th and 60th
minute the Canadians scored 3 unanswered goals. Ryan Gropp in the 55th,
Travis Konecny in the 57th and Jared McCann in the 60th minute were the
scorers for the Maple Leafs.
While Canada now is 2:0, Germany is still waiting (0:2) for their first victory either against Russia or Sweden.
Finland beats Switzerland 2:1 in a tight game
Host Finland faced Switzerland in their second game for the lead in Group A. In goal for Switzerland was
Gauthier Descloux who played his second game and for Finland Kaapo
Kahkonen was between the pipes. It took the Finns only 5 minutes to get
on the scoreboard a first time when Juho Lammikko shoved the puck over
the red line, assisted by Mikko Rantanen. Halftime of the first period
was played and now Switzerland with Denis Malgin, Kevin Fiala and Noah
Rod was harmonising together which resulted in the equalising goal. The
second period ended goalless but wasn't less thrilling with chances for
both teams to play with a man advantage. With the 3rd period going along
it was Sebastian Aho assisted by Manu Hopponen and Jere Rouhiainen who
scored the game winning goal at 49:09 minutes played. A Time-Out by
Swiss head coach Manuele Celio and replacing goalie Descloux couldn't
avoid the first loss for the Swiss squad at this tournament. Finland is
2:0 challenging the Czechs on Monday, Switzerland 1:1 and will face
Denmark on Monday as well.
First Shoot-out game goes to Sweden with a 4:3 win over Russia
In goal for Sweden was Linus Söderström, Russia had Alexander Trushkov
as netminder in a game between last years quarterfinalist Sweden and 4th
placed Russia. The 6th minute saw 5 players (2 Swedes, 3 Russians) get
benched for Roughing but it took another 6 minutes until the first goal
would be scored. Swedens Oskar Lindblom got passed Trushkov assisted by
William Nylander (his father is retired NHL star Michael Nylander) who
had 8 assists at last years U17 World Hockey Challenge. As Russia was
forced to play with one man less it was Gustav Forsling and again
Nylander with the assist to score the first powerplay goal of the game.
Period two was on it's way when in the 27th minute Sweden got another
chance for a powerplay, this time it was Oskar Lindblom with Gustav
Forsling and Adrian Kempe receiving the points for assists who increased
the lead to 3:0. Nothing seemed to indicate that this game would go
anywhere near overtime but with the 3rd period in motion it was Danil
Vovchenko scoring and Kirill Shukin and Yevgeni Svechnikov with the
assist in the 43rd minute. But it got even better when at halftime of
period 3 Alexei Sleptsov scored the 2nd goal for Russia, assisted by
Danil Vovchenko. Team Sweden then received a penalty for too many
players on the ice in the 52nd minute, Russia made short work out of
that power play chance and scored the game tying goal. Each Team took
their Time-Out at the end of the 3rd period but the regular time
remained scoreless. The 5 minute overtime didn't bring a decision and so
a Shootout competition would eventually decide.
While both Russians (Ivan Nikolishin and Danil Vovchenko) missed their
attempts, Adrian Kempe, William Nylander and again Adrian Kempe again,
scored for Sweden. Sweden now has a regulation plus a Shootout win, while Russia has an Overtime win and Shooutout loss.
