Croatia providing the biggest upset of the tournament
22 Apr 2014 | Alan Ilijic
With two shutout wins in the first two games, Croatia already met their initial goal - remain in Division IB. But more than that, they can now look to take top two seeds. Meanwhile, Poland proves them calling favorites is no blunder. Plus - Netherlands and Romania still winless.
The
British bounce back
After
a shocking tournament-opening loss to Croatia 4:0, the British team
successfully bounced back and got their first win. A 4:1 victory over Romania
may feel satisfactory, but the British might as well realize they're not
getting back to the higher tier. Romania are obviously flabby, but Croatia were
as well. Romania now stand with a goal difference of 1-11, as they opened the
tournament against Poland with a 7:0 loss.
After
a scoreless first period a fourth-liner Benjamin Davis opens the scoring at
32:45. Two minutes later the captain Jonathan Phillips doubles, setting the
track for the 3 points. In the third Colin Shields extends the margin to 3
goals.
Late
in the period, in the last minute, Otto Biro, reduces teh deficit, but merely
20 seconds after Mark Garside sets the final score to 4:1.

Croatia
on hot streak
Croatia
opens the tournament with two shutout wins, both against teams they had never
beaten before. The margin and the result were the same - Great Britain were the
first and the Dutch were next to fall to rising Croats 4:0.
Tadija
Miric and Michael Novak opened the scoring in the initial minutes of the game.
The Dutch were obviously shocked with the initial lead and aggressive defense
put on by the Croats. Mislav Blagus stressed Netherlands' fans once again in
the second period when he expands the lead to 3:0, while Ivan Brenčun puts the
story to the end with his first goal of the tournament.

Poland
sits on the peak
Lithuania
took on Poland in the final game of Day 2 in Siemens Arena. The hosts were in
the backseat only on the scoreboard as their resistance was fierce and brave. After
shuting out the Dutch in the first game, who now have the negative goal
difference of 0-8, the Lithuanians were hoping to provide an upset and sit in
the number 1 in the standings.
The
home arena was packed to the last place and the hosts were looking to strike
with the help of their faithful fans. Unfortunately for them, almost two minutes
into the game they were already down as Leszek Laszkiewicz racked up his third
strike of the tournament. The Polish were generally faster on the ice but not
so much better techincally and with puck control. In addition, the Polish were
more aggressive picking up 6 penalty minutes in the first period. They
collected 14 towards the end.
Tomasz
Malasinski doubles the score on the powerplay midway through the second frame.
And then, coming off a 5-on-3 powerplay Donatas Kumeliauskas cuts the lead to
half. Wajda and Dronia were doing their time in the box, while just as Wajda
was back on the ice Kumeliauskas scored an unbeliveable goal from the left of
the net with the severe angle.
In
the final period of the game Grzegorz Pasiut sets the win for Poland scoring
the game-winner at 47:57. At that moment it was 3:1, but the game-winning goal
stands due to the fact Darius Pliskauskas reduces the lead at 58:41 with the
extra attacker. Dainius Zubrus picked the best player award for team Lithuania
with two assists.
