During the past weekend's NHL draft 65 young European players from nine different countries were drafted.
The first European player to be drafted was Germany's Leon Draisaitl who was chosen as #3 overall by Edmonton Oilers. The first European defenseman selected was Julius Honka of Finland who was picked as number 14 by Dallas Stars. Vitek Vanecek from Czech Republic was the first European goalie to be drafted as number 39 overall by Washington Capitals.
Sweden had by far the most players drafted of the European countries - 28. Eight of them were even from the same club - Frölunda. Thirteen Russians were selected. Finland (9), Czech Republic (8), Switzerland (2), Latvia (2), Denmark (1), Slovakia (1) and Germany (1) also had drafted players. Countries like Belarus, France, Italy, Kazakhstan, Norway, Austria and Slovenia got no players drafted.
