Italian side wants to launch a new hockey tournament that would place in Italian Cortina-d'Ampezzo. The capital of Winter Olympic Games of 1956 where USSR team won first Olympic Gold in their history, now could become a place for top KHL team to compete before the season.
This idea was in the head of organizators for many years, but now it seemed that it would be a real thing since season-2014/15. This pre-season first KHL Metallurg Magnitogorsk had a summer pre-season there. Once only SKA team had a training camp in winter 6 years ago. During this camp current Gagarin Cup holder Metallurg played a game there against Red Bull Salzburg (5:2).
The format of first edition could have four teams, one of them could be local team Cortina or Italian national team, which will face against three KHL teams. One of the team with a big percentage could be Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Their vice-president Gennady Velichkin told Russian R-Sport that it's a good idea, because they often face with problems to find good teams to play against.
Organizators hopes that one day this tournament would have the same meaning as Suisse Spengler Cup in December. Advantages of Italian tourney is a spectatular place and it's a great time for hockey when no much hockey in the whole world.
