Sweden’s Oscar Lindberg scored his second goal of the game at 4:53 of overtime to give the Hartford Wolf Pack a 4-3 victory in their opening game of the AHL regular season.

The goal came during the new AHL overtime format when after the first four minutes of the extra session the team will play the remainder of the seven minute overtime in three on three fashion.

The winning play saw Lindberg and Chris Bourque raced in on a two on one and Bourque on the left wing hit a streaking Lindberg on the right wing and he one timed the pass out of the reach of Syracuse Crunch Russian rookie goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy making his AHL debut. It was the only Wolf Pack lead they had on the day.

Syracuse took a 1-0 lead in the second period at 1:35 as Tanner Richard was able to sweep in a rebound on the backhand off last year’s Syracuse goalie Cederic Desjardiins and it trickled over the goal line before he could sweep it away.

50 second later on the powerplay Lindberg got his first of the season as Chris Bourque’s shot from the right wing circle went off Lindberg battling in front and it too dribbled over the goal line. Bourque split last year between Russia and Switzerland.

Syracuse’s Cederic Paquette scored the first of his two goals to restore a one goal lead for Syracuse at 4:37 on a breakaway. Jerome Samson’s pass off the left wing boards found and open Paquette who raced in then slid a nice soft backhander past Desjardins five hole for the 2-1 lead.

The open side was created as defenseman Dylan McIlrath on a nice rush up the left side nobody picked up his right side giving Paquette the open lane off the left wing.

Hartford’s Chris Mueller in his first goal for the Wolf Pack after winning a Calder Cup last spring in Texas was surging on the right wing took a  perfect cross ice feed from the left wing by Ryan Bourque that sailed past Vasilevskiy and the game was tied at two at 9:26.

Syracuse re-established the lead at 3-2 when Paquette took a short pass from Swiss native Joel Vermin and in a one on one situation used McIrath as a partial screen and his wrist shot eluded Desjardins high at 11:02.

The Wolf Pack tied it three in the third period when Slovak native Marek Hrivik who had a strong two way game was on the doorstep and banged in Danny Kristo’s rebound at 6:35 for his first of the season.
