The former Västerås coach returns to his former club in his first job in hockey since coaching the Danish national side in the 2013 World Cup.
The 64-year old trained Västerås between 2003-2006 and has resided in the city or a number of years now. Bäckman will now work as an advisor for the inexperienced Västerås coaching staff.
Vasteras find themselves currently occupying 8th place in the Allsvenskan league and they'll be hoping Bäckman's guidance can help them push for a play-off position.
The former Farjestad coach met with the club's sports director, Niklas Johansson to discuss how he could aid the second division outfit.
"We decided that I should be able to support the coaching staff and see all the matches and some training sessions and offer feedback. They're quite young and have not been around for long, so hopefully I can come up with some good advice“ Bäckman told the Vasteras website.
Bäckman last worked in Sweden with Frolunda until he was fired in the 07/08 season. He has also worked with Malmo, Modo, AIK and lead Farjestad to the national championships in 1997.
