The first Quarter Final day of Champions Hockey League was played today. Four Finnish and four Swedish teams remain in the tournament. Today's winners were Luleå, Kärpät, HIFK and Skellefteå. The second games will be played in a week - Tuesday December 9th.
Lukko Rauma - Luleå HF 2-5
Luleå has had a hard time in SHL lately with six losses in a row. But in CHL the team continues to impress. A spot in the semis is close after today's away win.
"A great win for us. And important to score five goals", says Luleå's coach Joakim Fagervall to Aftonbladet after the game.
The Finnish players of Luleå were behind the win. Kristian Näkyvä and Niklas Fogström both had a goal and two assists. Lennart Petrell also had two assists.
Janne Niskala opened the scoring for Lukko in the 9th minute but it took less than a minute for Kristian Näkyvä to tie it. Luleå then got to a 2-goal lead later in the first period when Niklas Fogström and Karl Fabricius scored within 17 seconds. Emil Sylvegård made it 1-4 at 34:35. Lukko then got a little closer when Filip Riska scored a shorthanded goal two minutes before the second intermission. Chris Abbott scored 2-5, the last goal of the game, two minutes into period three.
SaiPa Lappeenranta - Kärpät Oulu 0-2
Joonas Donskoi scored both goals for Kärpät when SaiPa was beaten 2-0 in Lappeenranta. Both goals came in the second period. Iiro Tarkki in Kärpät's net only had to make 16 saves to earn the shutout. Jussi Markkanen in the home net faced even fewer shots, but he allowed two out of 12. The first period of the game saw only three shots - all for the home team.
HIFK Helsinki - Frölunda HC 2-1
HIFK's Slovak forward Tomas Zaborsky was the man behind the win tonight. He scored 1-0 just 34 seconds into the game and 2-1 at five minutes of the second period. Frölunda's goal was scored by the CHL top scorer Mathis Olimb at 12:23.
Linköpings HC - Skellefteå AIK 1-2
