Kloten won their celebration game against Davos while Rapperswil went the long way and beat EV Zug in a shootout.
Kloten Flyers - HC Davos 5:1
Today's game against HC Davos was special for Kloten as the Club
celebrated their 80th birthday with special jerseys and a choreography
by the fans.
But the home team didn't intend to give away presents this afternoon
after loosing their 9th straight derby against the ZSC Lions the evening
before. Kloten were missing top scorer Tommi Santala, Goalie Martin
Gerber, Marcel Jenni, Cyrill Bühler and Lukas Stoop. Most of the players
will return at the beginning of next year due to injuries.
And so the Flyers started with some aggressive forechecking. And they
were rewarded early as defensive back Philippe Schelling was able to
score off a rebound, assisted by Peter Guggisberg and Denis Hollenstein
in the 2nd minute. Even a 2 minute minor for too many players on the ice
couldn't hold off the strong Flyers offense to continue finding a way
to Leonardo Genoni's goal. Slowly but surely the Capricorns got into the
game, creating some trouble for number two goaltender Jonas Müller.
With a nice attack from the own zone, Flyers Stanescu passed the puck on
the left side to Guggisberg who saw Michael Liniger on the right side
and he had no trouble to puck in for the second goal of the evening in
the 11th minute. The Flyers kept on pushing and moving the puck fast and
as the 1st period was about to come to an end, Steve Kellenberger put
it in as he was given a nice pass by Philippe Schelling.
The start of the second period was a reflection of the first, Kloten
powering and firing away while Davos had trouble to create chances. A
slashing penalty against Dick Axelsson was the set up for a quick goal
by Peter Guggisberg, assisted by Steve Kellenberger and Rene Back in the
28th minute. And just as you thought that the Flyers had the game under
control, they started fooling around with the puck, playing unnecessary
passes and missing chances. That said, a counter attack by Davos lead
to their first goal, Marc Wieser assisted by Claude-Curdin Paschoud got
on the scoreboard at halftime of the game. The Flyers weren't
discouraged by the goal, still going strong on all cylinders when Corsin
Casutt scored the 5th goal for Kloten, assisted by Peter Guggisberg in
the 37th minute. Another few penalties were handed out in the last
minutes but the 2nd period ended 5:1.
Again, the starting minutes were dominated by the home team, wanting to
score the 6th goal. But the minutes passed by, the Flyers had reduced
the intensity a little but had Davos under control and kept the 3 points
at home.
Rapperswil Jona-Lakers - EV Zug 4:3 SO
Josh Holden opened the score in the Diners Arena in Rapperswil in the
11th minute but only 2 minutes later, the home team with Niklas Persson
equalized the game, assisted by Johan Fransson. But it was Josh Holden
once more with an assist by Daniel Sondell who got his team ahead with
15 seconds left in the starting period. Zug's Dominic Lammer was out for
a quick start in the second period when he scored the 3rd goal just 36
seconds after the puck had dropped. The Lakers were on a powerplay that
had almost ended when Nicklas Danielsson on a pass by Lukas Sieber
scored the 2nd goal in the 51st minute and let some excitement come up
for the final minutes of the game. And indeed, Niklas Persson kept his
team in the game when he scored the game tying goal just 10 seconds
before the end of regulation.
A 5 minute overtime passed by goalless and so the shootout had to decide
where Dan Weisskopf and Leandro Profico scored 2 goals on goalie
Stephan while only Josh Holden beat Tim Wolf in the Zug goal.
