In the evening game, host HC Davos faced Team Canada in a full house and the fans were given some great hockey.
The second game of the Spengler Cup turned out to be one of the classic
rivalries of the past decade. Home team HC Davos was looking to get the
head start into their tournament but Team Canada had the same ambitions.
Both teams started fast with chances at both ends but in the 8th minute
it was Beat Forster, assisted by Perttu Lindgren who scored the first
goal for HC Davos. Two minutes later, Davos had a first powerplay chance
but couldn't capitalize on the advantage. Canada tried to get the
equalizer in the first period but didn't succeed.
Davos had the slightly better start into the middle period and the
Canadians had some problems creating chances. But with 10 minutes played
they got their fist chance on the powerplay. But although the Canadians
had more than double the shots in the second period they still waited
for their first goal after 35 minutes. 37 minutes were played when
Perttu Lindgren took a seat in the box and gave Canada a chance for
another go but again, the Maple Leafs who played in retro jerseys
couldn't get the puck past Genoni and so the period ended goalless.
It took Davos 8 minutes in the third period and a powerplay when Dick Axelsson was able to score the second goal for his team. But just two minutes later, the Canadians finally got on the scoreboard when Alexandre Giroux, assisted by Gragnani. The game was now going back and forth with both teams taking penalties and just 7 minutes left. Canada tried everything to get the second goal but also as goalie Schaefer was replaced by a 6th field player Davos kept the upper hand and beat Team Canada 2-1.
