Russia wins Women’s Winter Universiade
Canada had won all three past women's hockey gold medals at the Winter Universiade, but in 2015 in Granada, Spain, it was Russia's turn. Russia beat Canada 3-0 in the final last night.
Russia had beaten Canada 3-1 already in the Group stage so they knew a final game win would be very much possible. The first period saw 25 shots for the teams combined but none that beat goalies Yulia Leskina of Russia or Elodie Rosseau-Sirois of Canada.
The tie was broken at 22:16 when Anna Shokhina scored her sixth goal of the tournament. Shokhina also got the next goal when Russia scored on a powerplay in the fourth minute of period three. Valeria Pavlova made it 3-0 with eight minutes to go and the gold medals were won.
Yulia Leskina made 40 saves for the shutout.
In the bronze medal game Japan beat China 3-1.
