The medal games of the 2015 Women's World Championship was played today at Malmö Isstadion. USA beat Canada in a great final game. Earlier in the day Finland had beaten Russia for the bronze medals.
Gold to USA again. Canada won the first eight World Championships (1990-2004) but Team USA has now won six of the last eight World Championships. In today's final USA won 7-5 in a very entertaining game. It looked like it would be an easy win for USA who had 3-0 after 11 minutes, 4-1 after 17 minutes and 5-2 after 27:33. But the Canadian players scored three goals in two minutes to tie the game at 5 after 32:06. The Americans restored the lead and secured the gold medals in the latter half of the third period when Brianna Decker scored 6-5 and Kendall Coyne 7-5.
The other American goals were scored by Anne Pankowski, Hilary Knight, Megan Keller, Anne Schleper and Haley Skarupa. Rebecca Johnston (2), Marie-Philip Poulin, Brigitte Lacquette and Caroline Oulette scored the Canadian goals.
Finland got a quite easy bronze medal game against Russia. Rosa Lindstedt and Michelle Karvinen used power play opportunities to give them a 2-0 lead in the first period. Linda Välimäke scored the only goal of the middle period to make it 3-0. Tatiana Burina scored the only Russian goal at 51:48 before Karoliina Rantamäki finalized the score at 4-1 with a late empty-netter. This was the first Finnish medal since 2011.
