After a long season the UK's Elite Ice Hockey League comes to an end. As per Nottingham's National Ice Centre hosts the league's play-off final which sees the Sheffield Steelers, who finished the regular season top of the league, take on Coventry.
As you'd expect Sheffield went into the final as favourites. The Steelers have been crowned play-off champions a total of 9 times, with last year being their most recent success. But Coventry clearly hadn't read the script.
Coventry outplayed their oppenents for the first 2 periods and after 40 minutes of play the league leaders found themselves down 4-0. Sheffield managed to pull it back to a 2 goal defecit in the final period but it would prove to be too late as Coventry ran out as winners. Under Chuck Weber, who took over as head coach mid-way through the season, Coventry have had quite a turn around and this win in Nottingham gives the club their first piece of silverware since 2010.
Steven Goertzen, who captained Sheffield to glory last year, opened up the scoring for Coventry at the 3 minute mark.
Sheffield struggled to get any offence going until Mike Forney was denied by Coventry goalie Brian Stewart on a breakaway opportunity.
Stewart, the EIHL's netminder of the year, then came out on top against player of the year Mathieu Roy.
Jereme Tendler made it 2-0 30 seconds into the second period before Stewart once again pulled off a spectacular save to keep defecit to two.
Coventry's other goals came from Ross Venus and then Ashley Tait, who netted the overtime winner when Coventry last lifted the trophy back in 2005.
