Goal fest when Canada beats Latvia. Slovakia upsets Sweden. Wins for Finland and Russia.
The U18 World Championship started on Thursday with a surprise when Slovakia won 3-1 against Sweden. Sweden outshot Slovakia but good defending and goaltending gave Slovakia a good start to the tournament. Marek Hecl scored the game winning goal with just four minutes left to play.
The second game of the tournament between Canada and Latvia was a real goal fest that saw 17 goals. Latvia took the lead three times in the first period but Canada showed that they were the better team and turned things around to 8-3 after 6-0 in the second period. In the third period Latvia got some consolation goals and the final score was 11-6. Jeremy Roy scored three goals for Canada.
Russia got off to a good start with a 3-1 win against USA despite that USA had 50 shots on goal. Ilya Samsonov came up with a brilliant effort ta save 49 shots and give his team the chance to win the game.
In the last game of day one Finland showed good class by beating the Czech Republic fairly easy, 6-1. Vili Sarijärvi, Patrik Laine and Jonne Tammela all scored one goal and added two assists.
