After eleven seasons IIHF decided to cancel the club tournament European Women's Champions Cup.
The reasons for cancelling EWCC are financial. Some of the involved clubs have begged to IIHF to reconsider but the decision stands. As of now there is no international tournament for the best women's club teams.
"Of course we want some kind of tournament to get international exchange and to compete with the best", says Anders Mäki, GM of Linköpings HC (last year's runner-up) to Corren.se. "The develoment goes forwards in almost all sports, but this is a step backwards. It does not feel good at all".
Some of the top teams will play EWHL Supercup, but none from Russia, Sweden or Finland - the three countries that have dominated EWCC.
The EWHL Supercup will be played in two groups.
Group A:
EHV Sabres Vienna (AUT)
Bolzano Eagles (ITA)
ZSC Lions Zurigo (SUI)
HC SKP Bratislava (SVK)
ERC Ingolstadt (GER)
Group B:
ESC Planegg (GER)
Austrian Selects (AUT)
ECDC Memmingen (GER)
KMH Budapest Selects (HUN)
In the league EWHL the following teams wil play: EHV Vienna Sabres Vienna (AUT), DEC Salzburg Eagles (AUT), HC SKP Bratislava (SVK), KMH Budapest (HUN), Neuberg Highlanders (AUT), Bolzano Eagles (ITA) and Aisulu Almaty (KAZ).
