It was a considerably tougher game for HV71 today as they were facing SHL newcomers Malmö Redhawks in Kinnarps Arena. Malmö laid the ground in the first period.
We
got to see a great intensity in the first period. Especially from the
visitors side as they dominated the period. HV71 created a couple of
opportunities, but the puck wouldn't find its way in behind Oscar
Alsenfelt in Malmös' net.
The high forechecking from Malmö didn't gave HV71 time to build up their own gameplay and instead Malmö could win the most man-to-man battles. Malmös' intensity rewarded them with three goals and especially their first goal was a beauty.
Himmelfarb found Thuresson directly inside the offensive blueline, who didn't made any mistakes. A great shot on a one-timer. HV71 had problems in their defensive zone by losing their positions. Teemu Laine had a great opportunity in HV71's only powerplay in the first period, but he missed the open net.
Malmö played smart and used their turnovers to create chances. The line with Thuresson – Mueller - Himmelfarb played a great combination play and were dangerous every time they came in to the offensive zone.
Second period.
HV71 began the middle act with one less
player and this gave Malmö an opportunity to extend their lead. But
the home team made it through and equalized Malmös' upper hand. After HV71 missed a mark on the
defensive blueline, Kim Rosdahl got a great opportunity, but Erik
Ersberg in the net denied him. In the first minutes of play, HV71
created more opportunities than they did in the first period.
Six minutes in to the act, some emotions were shown. Nicklas Jadeland got in a tangle after he ran over Ersberg. Chris Campoli and Ryan O`Byrne got two minutes each and Jadeland got 4 minutes.
HV71 changed their goalie halfway and
Fredrik Pettersson-Wentzel came in. At the same time, both teams
didn't have a structured play and it was more as a positional war
going on on the ice.
HV71 tried to break in in front of Alsenfelt several times, but Malmö was too disciplined in the defensive play. Malmö extended their lead to 0-4, after 13.56 played and it was eye candy. Jens Jakobs passed the puck behind his back to Nicklas Jadeland who placed it high above Pettersson-Wentzel. A smart move that totally bewildered HV71. Tedenby was close to reduce as he deflected a pass from Kristoffer Berglund. but Alsenfelt were awake.
The junior player, Filip Lestan got to
visit the penalty box for a boarding with 3.10 left to play. Though
the attendance didn't like the penalty, it was a fair one. On a
turnover, Simon Önerud came free with Alsenfelt and tried to trick
him in the wrong direction, but Alsenfelt continued to keep the
number intact. The second period ended 0-4 and Malmö once again were
the stronger team through out the act.
Third Period:
HV71 got a great start in the third act
as Mattias Tedenby reduced to 1-4, after breaking in in front of
Alsenfelt. Teemu Laine found Tedenby high up in the neutral zone and
Tedenby had a free way in to the net. This gave HV71 momentum and some extra
energy, which lead to a powerplay after 03.06 played. Tedenby and
Laine had a good play together as they created another opportunity,
but this time the puck wouldn't find its way in.
Malmö came back and the high forechecking from continued and HV71 had appearingly difficulties in the defensive zone. Malmö played with intensity, fast puck movement and quick conclusions. HV71 got another powerplay and therefore a great chance to reduce Malmös' lead once again. The visitors tight defense didn't let HV71 create anything and instead Filip Sandberg took an unecessary penalty.
HV71 tried to establish a play the last
minutes, but Malmö was too disciplined and unarmed the puck
carrieres easily. Teemu Laine got a match penalty for abuse of
referee after have had a wrestling match with Magnus Häggström in
Malmös' zone. Malmö got to end the period in powerplay.
Game summary:
HV71 didn't bring much in to this game.
Malmö came with an energy that HV71 was missing tonight. Malmö were
the better team through the whole game. If this continues, the
newcomers will be a dangerous team in SHL this season.
