Before SHL - Eurohockey presents Luleå Hockey
The start of 2015/16 SHL season is closing in and for upcoming season, there will be 14 teams competing for the trophy Le Mat. Reigning champions are Växjö Lakers. For the next 14 days, Eurohockey is presenting one team each day. In Part 9. we meet Luleå Hockey.
Luleå ended up in 8th place past season and had to play against Djurgårdens IF in a so called Play-in to the Playoffs. Luleå managed to defeat Djurgården, but after seven tough games against Frölunda HC in the quarterfinal round, Luleå had to take an early vacation. Though Luleå were eliminated early in SHL Playoffs, they won the CHL Trophy. So it wasn't a complete failed season for the team from Northern Sweden.
For upcoming season, Luleå have lost Chris Abbott, Cam Abbott, Dean Kukan, Niklas Fogström, Kristian Näkyvä. But due to a sponsor that have put in some great amount of money, Luleå have managed to sign some great players. Among these we will find Toni Rajala, Jacob Micflikier and Bill Sweatt. Together, they have produced a total of 115 points last year in SHL. We will also find the Finnish defenseman Ilari Melart, Brendan Mikkelson and Craig Schira.
Luleå have played eight preseason games and won 4 of these. In the +/- department, Luleå have +6 (23-17) and a scoring average of 0.75%. Which makes them score 1.75 goals/game. This is certainly going to be increased as Luleå get their play together.
-"We're ready to get going," Bill Sweatt said in an interview earlier.
Luleås' opening game will be against reigning champions Växjö Lakers on September 17th in Vida Arena, Växjö, Sweden.
