EIHL Round up 18th/19th/20th September
The Elite League Challenge Cup took centre stage this weekend. Beginning on Friday Belfast Giants beat the Edinburgh Capitals in a protracted overtime game: the actual result being determined a day later due to a confusion over overtime for this competition.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Gui Doucett scored
the game winner, again in overtime, for Cardiff Devils as they beat Braehead
Clan 5-4.
Sheffield Steelers put five past a hapless
Coventry Blaze with netminder Tyler Plante posting a 20 shot shot out, his
second of the season.
In one of the quirks of the Elite League
the game between Nottingham Panthers and new boys Manchester Storm counted to both
regular season and challenge cup. In this game a hat trick for Brad Moran
helped seal a sizeable victory for Nottingham.
On the Sunday four teams were in Cup action
and the game of the night was in Manchester
as Gui Doucet scored twice to enable Cardiff Devils to get the better of
Manchester Storm in a 14 goal thriller, which was only decided in the final two
minutes.
Edinburgh Capitals were again involved in
an overtime game with the same outcome, as Fife Flyers took the to extra time
before Pat Cullen scored for Fife.
In the two remaining games, Bobby Chaumont
scored the game winner for Dundee Stars as they defeated Braehead Clan and
Coventry Blaze got their own shut out as they beat Nottingham Panthers 1-0.
