Frölunda of Sweden had the lead against German Ingolstadt in their first game of the Champions Hockey League playoffs but the Germans got back to win 4-2.
Frölunda scored twice in the opening minutes of the game in Saturn Arena but then the Ingolstadt goalie Timo Pielmeier wouldn't allow more. He saved 49 of the 51 shots he faced tonight and was the key to the German victory.
"We had tons of chances, but couldn't score. This is a hard loss and we are very disappointed," said Joel Lundqvist of Frölunda to championshockeyleague.net.
Captain Joel Lundqvist and Artturi Lehkonen scored for Frölunda before Alexander Barta scored the first goal for the home team in the middle of the first period. The equalizer came 20 minutes later when Danny Irmen used a powerplay. Two minutes before the second intermission Ingolstadt took over the lead on a goal by Jared Ross. Petr Taticek made it 4-2 in the third period, a goal that may be very important for the outcome of the 2-game-series. The second game will be played in Gothenburg in a week.
All other first leg games of the first round were played last Tuesday.
