With a series of great saves, Mogo Riga goalie secures a key victory for his team against host in Miskolc
The ice is hot in the night of Miskolc: Mogo Riga and the host of DVTK face for the game probably decisive for the qualification. Latvian team arrived in Hungary without two key players, Ronalds Cinks, injured, and Valērijs Fiļimonovs who left the team. But coach Olegs Sorokins is concentrated on the goal: “Absolutely, we want to conquest of the next round of the Continental Cup, we intensified the trainings in last weeks to be ready for this competition. On the other side, MOL Liga champion DVTK Miskolc want to prove to its fans the club has reached an international standard. Miskolc has recently terminated the contract with American goaltender Mark Guggenberger for a serious injury and has a teen goalies' duo, with Romanian 18 years old Attila Adorjan as starter.
Game has immediately a good rhythm, very different from the first match of the day. Both teams try to take the control of the ice and, even if there aren't so many chances, both goalies have to work, with Henrijs Ancs facing the most dangerous shots. The game is physical and the tension on the ice is high. During a power play at the end of first period, hosts has perhaps the best chances to open the score, both with Dansereau, but Ancs is always reactive while his colleague Adorjan made the last save of the period.
Another penalty at the begin of second period is fatal for Mogo: with Renars Demiters in the sinbin, finally Miskolc opens the score with Kalvin Sagert, but Latvians remain concentrate, despite the pressure from the stands and quickly tie game with a nice move by Edgars Kurmis. At 25 a brave move by Adorjan, leaving the cage to forestall Ozolins, solves a difficult situation. But the young goalie can't do anything at 25:20 when Andrejs Lavrenovs find the right angle with a nice move. At 30 Adorjan is reactive on a short-range shot by Miks Lipsbergs. The central part of period is for Mogo that could increase the score but Adorjan and the lack of accuracy, especially by Begovs, keep Miskolc alive. At 39.40 Goz is hit on the face by the puck and leave the ice. Adorjan blocks a shot from the blue by Feoktistovs to close the period.
Balasz Goz leaving the ice after being hit by a puck
In the last period Ancs well deflected with the leg a dangerous shot by Dudas after 2 minutes, same does Adorjan 2 minutes later on Saviels. At 46 Toth misses the decisive deflection on a pass by Dansereau. At 48 shorthanded Pavuk misses a great chance shooting on Ancs in a two-versus– one situation. Latvian goalie stretches the leg deflecting a diagonal shot by Dansereau one minute later. At 51 Demiters risks an incredible own goal deflecting with the skates the puck that passes inches from the post. It's the best assault of Miskolc on power play (Brakss out for unsportsmanlike conduct) with Ancs building a wall in front of Hungarian forwards. Latvian goalie is incredibly reactive closing the door on Leppanen at 54 after a confused melee in front of Mogo cage. Pushed by the crowd home team frankly deserves the goal but – apart the miracles by Ancs – also the forwards, especially Dansereau, Toth and Dudas are extremely inaccurate.
Home
team pulls the goalie for the last two intense minutes that become a
real siege but the Latvian wall resists and Mogo makes a maybe
decisive step towards the qualification. Miskolc
really plays with a great intensity but can claim itself for the lack
of scoring instinct
