Another legend retires
A third retirement from Sheffield Steelers as Sarich retires.
At the end of March I noted that two greats of the Sheffield
Steelers, Hewitt and Legue, were due to retire.
Now the news has broken that Rod Sarich has decided ten
seasons is enough and he has obviously decided that three titles and two championship successes
are plenty.
The Florida Panthers draft pick (104th overall)
joined Sheffield Steelers in 2005 from Augusta Lynx in the East Coast Hockey
League. Early in his career he played with Vancouver Canucks before being
drafted to the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL where he spent four seasons as a
junior before moving to Louisiana Icegators of the ECHL for a couple of
seasons.
Sheffield Steelers became his club though and he made 577
appearances for them clocking up 360 points.
His career almost came to an abrupt end in 2011 when a big
hit caused him to need a kidney operation.
However, he came back the following season and adapted his
role from being a flamboyant offensive defenceman to a more stay at home type
of player.
He did not lose any of his earlier impact though, as one
might expect after a serious injury and his smooth skating style and quarterbacking
of the powerplay were synominous of his Sheffield Steelers career.
