The Americans win after penalties and knock Czechia out of the tournament
Let's say it: the Czech Republic was surely one of the teams who did its best so far. Notwithstanding their defeat on the hands of Denmark, the Czechs ended the qualification phase at the first place in Group A: against them there was a good, bud underperforming US team, which ended the group phase after having suffered many defeats (not only against Canada and Finland, but also against Germany). They were thus likely candidates to sudden and painless elimination, but it wasn't the case.
To be honest, it was not a thrilling game. Both teams played defensively, and the first score came on a penalty after that Patrick Maroon committed hooking: the scorer was Tomas Zohorna for the Czech Republic.
The equalizer came at the very beginning of the second period, with Auston Matthews assisted by Frank Vatrano and Chris Wideman: then, both teams got penalized for having interfered on the opposing goalies, and the Americans received to minutes more inside the third period for having too many men on ice.
Even the overtime was fruitless, and the decider was again scored by Matthews, the real "man of the match" on ice. Team USA will now encounter the winner between Canada and Sweden, after what was -let's say it- a true minor upset.
