Sweden may have had an early 3-0 lead, but an incredible second half by the Americans saw the United States take the 4-3 win at their annual National Junior Evaluation Camp tournament.
The start for the Americans couldn't have been much worse. It all started when Jens Looke, who has experience with Sweden at the past two World Juniors, sent a very weak shot towards the net, somehow trickling between the legs of Joseph Woll at the 1:06 mark of the opening period to take the easy 1-0 lead.
Sweden would once again find the net just two shots later. This time, it would be Sebastian Ohlsson who would take a pass from Jonathan Davidsson, tapping the puck in at the doorstep to extend Sweden's lead after a very poor start by the Americans.
The terrible effort by the Americans only got worse at the end of the period. With under two minutes to go in the opening frame, Lias Andresson got the puck out to Looke, who, once again, forced it on the net and found a whole behind Woll, who allowed his third goal on just seven shots.
The Americans would find an edge early in the second to get themselves on the board. This time, Kieffer Bellows was able to find an open Troy Terry in front of the net. Terry's good wrist shot proved too dangerous for Filip Gustavsson, who couldn't do anything to stop the powerful shot to give the United States their first goal of the game.
The Americans eventually got their feet back and into the game. With just about six minutes left in the second, Jack Roslovic did a great job of skating around in the offensive zone before sending it towards the net, only to have his fellow Winnipeg Jets teammate Erik Foley pick up the loose puck and jam it in on the rebound.
With 5:20 left in the period, the Americans scored again to tie it up. This time, Jordan Greenway fought off a defensive challenge in the corner, only to break free and find himself in front of the net. He got the puck and would get stopped on the firs try, but the strong power forward spun and hit home the rebound, tying the game up at three goals apiece.
Could the Americans really overcome the 3-0 deficit from early on? Yes, they could. With under five minutes remaining in the contest, the small Alex DeBrincat made a pass to the giant Logan Brown in front of the net, with Brown tapping in the pass to give the Americans the come-from-behind 4-3 lead while taking the win in the process.
Both teams will get Thursday off before Sweden meets up with Canada on Friday at 1:00 PM ET. The Americans will look to stay strong again against Finland, who also came back on Wednesday to beat the Canadians in a 2-1 match.
