After a series of challenge cup games for many sides all the EIHL teams have now started the new campaign.
Back to back champions the Sheffield Steelers finally began there title defence last week. After qualifying for the next round of the Challenge Cup they turned their attention to the league and yesterday (Friday) defeated challengers Braehead Clan for the second time having won out 5-3 only four days earlier. This was after Braehead added two quick goals in period 2 to draw level before Steelers pressure told.
In the two other EIHL games on Saturday three unanswered goals saw Cardiff Devils, runners up last year, force a win against Belfast giants this after Belfast had scored two goals in quick succession to take an early lead.
In the other game Nottingham Panthers eventually shook off the close attention of Manchester storm to win 8-5.
Just one league game was played on Sunday as Coventry Blaze travelled to Dundee Stars. This game belonged to the Blaze even though Stars levelled after a Brett Robison opener. Two powerplay goals within a minute in the second period put Coventry ahead and they sealed things through Garret Klotz scoring a late goal.
In the challenge cup Edinburgh Capitals look on coursefor a second round place when they defeated neighbours Fife Flyers 6-4 and Sheffield Steelers ensured a quarter final spot by beating Manchester Storm afte a shootout. Check out the last controversial penalty shot.
