Against tough opponents two favourites toiled but keep perfect record
Second day of
World Championship Division I opens in Budapest with Italy challenging Netherlands, back from its tough debut against Hungary. And also game against Italy seems to be a nightmare: after just 21 seconds MVP Luca Ansoldi scores in the first shot and Giulio Scandella doubled at 03:22 killing a Dutch power play. A carnage seems be about to happen on Budapest ice, but Netherlands are able to resist and begin to counter attack, Daniel Bellissimo made a difficult save on captain Bob Teunissen. Fontanive and De Toni had good chances but Meierdres is ready to foil. At 16:56 Anthony Demelinne found tthe net on a rebound and sent Oranges down by one at first break. Second period begins and Netherlands ties game, again with Demelinne on a smart Jamie Schaafsma - Netherlands MVP - assist. Come back completed, but Italy waits just one minute to score third decisive goal: Marcel Kars took two minutes for tripping, Italian power play unit works well and Pat Iannone records
3-2. Last period ended scoreless but Italy had some chances to enlarge score, but Insam, Watson and Iori slammed on Meierdres pads
At night 7000 spectators push Hungary against Korea, debuting in World Championship: asian nation try to face Hungarian attacks but Ted Sator team scored twice in first eight minutes with Marton Vas and Roger Holeczy. Defender Ku Don Lee restores Korean hopes but before end of first period Istvan Sofron cheer up crowd, preparing for a rain of goals in second period. But Korea doesn't need umbrella, with very fast counterattacks and a solid performance by goalie Hyung Seum Eum central period ends scoreless and in the last a surprise: two goals from 45 to 49 but not in expected cage: Sang Wok Kim (alligned in Korean third line, funnily all composed by Kims) ending a fray in front of Szuper cage with the help of TV replay and Sang Woo Sin, stealing a puck, tied game talking down arena. Hungary unsuccessfully attacks, goalie Eum well defends, just a goal by a "best supporting actor" can rock the boat: the "guy" is Daniel Koger at 55:17. Goal comes back from the dead Hungary: Istvan Sofron scored twice for final
6-3, turning the nightmare in the dream of be back in Elite Group
