Canada Black has taken their first victory of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge after beating the Czech Republic 3-2 in a very tight contest at the Harbour Station on Monday afternoon.
Similar to the Russia vs Finland match earlier in the day, this one didn't have the intensity that fans witnessed over the weekend. Both teams came in looking for their first victory, and despite the struggles by the Czechs yesterday to keep the puck out of their zone, they, at times, looked like the better team.
But at 6:46 in the second, Canada scored the first goal of the game. Josh Lawrence's first chance was stopped and Jean-Luc Foudy was close, but Jan Bednar kicked the puck to the right of the net. That was the perfect spot for Pier-Olivier Roy to pick up the loose disk, sending it past Bednar in the empty cage to make it 1-0 Canada.
At the 14 minute mark, the Czechs got one back. They hadn't had many dangerous scoring chances in the period, but Jan Cikhart was in the right spot at the right time to knock in Tomas Chlubna's rebound on the power play, giving the Czechs their first goal of the game before the end of the middle stanza.
A nifty play in the Canadian zone would result in the go-ahead goal early in the third period. At 2:05, Jamie Drysdale would flip the puck from Canada's zone down the ice to Jean-Luc Foudy. Foudy doesn't many breakaway opportunities and that didn't change when he made a quick move before backhanding it between Bednar's legs, giving Canada the 2-1 lead.
But the Czechs weren't out of the game. Stepan Machacek At 9:15, Jake Murray gave the puck up in the neutral zone and the team couldn't recover in their own zone. Stepan Machacek would then find Jakub Maly in the slot, with Maly beating Garin Bjorklund to make it 2-2 late in the game.
For the second straight game, Canada Black found themselves having to play extra time. The result on Monday was much better for them, with Foudy dancing around the net after waiting to take a shot and found Ryan O'Rourke in front. The defenceman quickly popped the puck past Bednar, giving Canada Black the 3-2 victory, their first win of the tournament.
The final day of round-robin action will see the Czechs meet up with Canada White at 7:30 PM AST. Earlier in the day, Canada will have a highly-anticipated bout with the United States, a 3:00 PM contest for the two hockey rivals.
