IIHF President René Fasel confirmed the decision. Also the fate of Champions League is still on question
Played since 1997, the IIHF Continental Cup the tournament will not be played in 2020-2021 season, as confirmed by IIHF President Renè Fasel to Russian news agency TASS.
"We decided to cancel this tournament. There are many risks associated with its holding, there are too many logistical problems when traveling, given the requirements of the IIHF medical committee. We believe this is the right decision," Fasel said.
Since 2009, the Continental Cup is the only club competition held under the control of the IIHF. The preliminary rounds traditionally start in September, the final part - at the beginning of January. The calendar of 20-21 edition, published last June, reduced the format cancelling the first round.
About the other clubs' competition, the Champions League, 12% of whose shares belong to IIHF, Fasel admits the possibility of cancel or modify also this tournament:
"The tournament board decided to play in October, we need to wait for what the situation will be. We will see how this is possible, given the complexity and limitations" Fasel said.
