After 8 months without any form of ice hockey in Great Britain 3 NIHL sides began an experiment to get things moving again.
Milton Keynes Lightning, Swindon wildcats and Sheffield Steeldogs of the NIHL (the second tier of ice hockey in the UK) joined forces to play a 'streaming series' of games over three weeks. They will play a series of behind-closed-doors games as test events for a possible return to play for the sport in this country.
All three clubs were classified under the government’s elite sport criteria and under current rules are allowed to continue with this trial in a COVID-secure environment. ‘Elite’ clubs must have a physician in their organisation who is familiar with the emerging evidence related to post-COVID-19 pathology and who will lead on ensuring any suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases are managed in line with the sport’s COVID-19 case management protocols and current government guidance.
It is a great opportunity for fans in Britain to see some ice hockey and also for players from all levels to play. Their have been players from Elite league sides availing themselves of the opportunity as well as the established players in the National Ice Hockey League.
The first weekends games have been played with Swindon and Sheffield winning, the full schedule is below.
