Great goaltending in the World Juniors opener
Slovakia beat Switzerland 1-0 in a game where both goalies were named best players of the game.
Last year when Slovakia and Switzerland played in the World Juniors in Trinec the Swiss team won 7-2. Today we saw a totally different game. The goalies - Simon Latkóczy of Slovakia and Thibault Fatton of Switzerland played at their top and combined for 60 saves.
The only goal of the game was scored 5:43 before the end by Roman Faith. He picked up a loose puck in front of the net and could easily get if past Fatton. Slovakia took a few penalties after the goal giving the Swiss team chances to get back, but Latkoczy was unbeatable. With 3:16 remaining he made a big save when Inaki Baragano had a wide open net from the left circle. The Slovak defense was brave the final minutes with several blocked shots.
The first period Switzerland played undisciplined and Slovakia got three opportunities on the powerplay and outshot Switzerland 12-5. The second period was close but not with many scoring chances. Slovakia played well in the third period but after the goal Switzerland put a lot of pressure towards the Slovak net.
Slovakia's next game is on Monday against the home team Canada. Switzerland will play Finland on Sunday.
