Växjö wins Swedish championship
Växjö Lakers won the Swedish SHL playoffs for the third time.
Växjö beat Rögle 6-2 in game 5 to win the SHL final series 4-1. Pontus Holmberg had a big break in the playoffs scoring 7+7 in 14 games. He also won the Stefan Liv trophy as the playoffs MVP.
In the regular season Växjö also finished on top. Färjestad was beaten 4-0 in the quarter finals and then Växjö won a very close semi final series 3-2 over Örebro.
The final series started with two home wins for Växjö: 2-1 and 3-2 (OT). Rögle bounced back to win game 3 5-1. Game 4 was decided in overtime where Pontus Holmberg got the winning 3-2 goal after just a minute.
Olli Palola scored 1-0 for Rögle in the first period of game five but Holmberg tied it in the second with a powerplay goal. Fredrik Karlström made it 2-1 at 42:50. Jack Drury scored the series winning 3-1 goal on the man advantage with a little less then 8 minutes remaining. When Rögle pulled goalie Johan Gustafsson for an extra attacker Växjö added another two goals by Marcus Sylvegård and Jack Drury. Palola got his second goal for 6-2 at 58:01 but the game was already lost.
Växje played the entire final series with backup goalie Erik Källgren after Viktor Fasth had been injured in the semi finals.
Head Coach Sam Hallam won his third gold medal with Växjö. 2015 and 2018 they also won the title under Hallam.
