Norway - Japan 4-2

In a crucial Olympic qualifying match, Norway managed a 4-2 victory over Japan, overcoming a shaky start to secure the win. The game, held at the Gigantium Isarena in Aalborg, saw Japan take an unexpected lead in the first period. Teruto Nakajima scored for Japan against the run of play, capitalizing on a counterattack set up by Chikara Hanzawa. Despite dominating early, Norway found themselves down 0-1 at the end of the first period.

Norway’s response came in the second period, turning the game around with three goals in quick succession. Ken Andre Olimb scored the equalizer after 34 minutes, assisted by Thomas Olsen and Sander Vold Engebråten. This goal shifted the momentum, leading to veteran Patrick Thoresen putting Norway ahead with a well-executed one-timer, following a pass from Mats Zuccarello. Shortly after, 18-year-old rising star Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, who had already made a strong impression earlier in the game, extended the lead with a power play goal, assisted by Zuccarello and Stian Solberg.

Brandsegg-Nygård added another goal early in the third period, solidifying Norway’s control with a 4-1 lead. Despite a late push from Japan, including a power-play goal by Yushiroh Hirano, Norway’s defense held firm, and the game ended 4-2. Norwegian goalie Henrik Haukeland played a key role, stopping 30 shots and maintaining a save percentage of 93.75%. On the other side, Japan’s goalie Yuta Narisawa faced 35 shots, saving 31 for an 88.57% save rate.

The game highlighted Norway’s resilience and the emerging talent of Brandsegg-Nygård, though the team’s performance drew some criticism for its inconsistency. Veteran players like Zuccarello and Thoresen were instrumental in turning the tide after a challenging first period. With this win, Norway moves forward in the tournament, but they will need to improve their play to secure an Olympic spot, especially with tougher opponents like Denmark ahead.

Denmark - Great Britain 3-1

In their Olympic qualifying match on August 29, 2024, Denmark secured a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Great Britain at the Gigantium Isarena in Aalborg. The game marked the beginning of Denmark's Olympic qualification campaign, with the hosts facing a resilient British side that managed to hold them at bay for much of the contest.

Denmark struck early, taking the lead just over three minutes into the game when Markus Holton Lauridsen fired a one-timer past British goaltender Ben Bowns. Despite this early setback, Great Britain responded swiftly. On their first power play of the game, Liam Kirk, the standout player for Great Britain, scored a brilliant top-shelf goal to tie the game at 1-1.

The second period was characterized by strong defensive play from Great Britain, frustrating Denmark's efforts to regain the lead. Danish forward Lars Eller had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock when awarded a penalty shot, but Bowns denied him, maintaining the 1-1 scoreline through 40 minutes.

The game shifted decisively in the third period. Denmark's relentless pressure eventually paid off when Nikolaj Ehlers scored on a power play, putting his team ahead 2-1. The British defense, which had been solid throughout, began to tire, and Lars Eller capitalized by scoring Denmark's third goal, effectively sealing the victory.

Denmark's victory was a result of their persistence and the offensive contributions of key players like Ehlers, Eller, and Blichfeld, who assisted on all three goals. Despite the loss, Great Britain displayed remarkable resilience, with Bowns making several outstanding saves to keep his team in contention. Denmark will now prepare to face Japan, while Great Britain has a quick turnaround before taking on Norway.
