Slovakia triumphs at Kaufland Cup 2024
Slovakia showcased their dominance once again, clinching their third consecutive title at the Christmas Kaufland Cup in Poprad
The tournament provided a thrilling showcase of
international hockey and served as a critical preparation stage for the
upcoming World Championships in May 2024.
This year’s victory, achieved against
formidable opponents Latvia and Norway, extended Slovakia’s undefeated streak
in the tournament to eight games, reinforcing their supremacy in this
pre-Christmas event
The Slovak team opened their campaign with a
challenging encounter against Norway. Despite Norway’s early lead, the Slovaks
rallied with goals from Gajdoš, Faško-Rudáš, and Tamáš to secure a hard-fought
win. However, the match was not without its setbacks, as Matej Kašlík sustained
an injury after colliding with a Norwegian player during the third period.
Assistant coach Peter Frühauf praised Norway’s
aggressive strategy, acknowledging the pressure they applied. “They bet on
speed and ferocity, giving terribly little space,” he remarked. Despite
Norway’s tenacity, Slovakia maintained composure, narrowly edging out their
opponents in shots on goal (22-20).
The tournament finale saw Slovakia face off
against Latvia in a tightly contested match. Šimon Petráš gave Slovakia an
early lead in the 15th minute, but Latvia responded in the second period with
an equalizer. The game hung in balance until Jakub Minárik scored the decisive
goal in the 56th minute, securing Slovakia’s 2-1 victory.
Coach Craig Ramsay acknowledged his team’s
struggles during the second period, noting a lapse in discipline and focus. “We
started to play like a pond; everyone was all over the place,” he explained.
Despite these challenges, Slovakia managed to regroup, with goalie Matej
Škorvánek delivering a stellar performance to keep Latvia at bay.
The triumph was celebrated in front of an
enthusiastic home crowd, with team captain Matúš Sukeľ receiving the Kaufland
Cup from Slovak Ice Hockey Federation (SZĽH) president Miroslav Šatan. The
players expressed their gratitude to the fans, who filled the arena with energy
and support.
“It’s always a nice feeling to win a
tournament, especially in front of the home fans,” shared Šimon Petráš. Adam
Žiak echoed these sentiments, adding, “We wanted to please the spectators in
both matches.”
The celebration concluded with the traditional
Slovak Christmas carol “Tichá noc” (“Silent Night”), blending the spirit of
hockey with the warmth of the festive season.
The Christmas Kaufland Cup provided a valuable
testing ground for Slovakia ahead of the 2024 World Championships in Sweden and
Denmark. Coach Ramsay emphasized the importance of the tournament as a learning
experience. “Both matches were an excellent test,” he stated, highlighting the
opportunity to identify areas for improvement and refine strategies.
Slovakia’s recent success at the German Cup in
November, where they defeated Denmark, Austria, and Germany to claim their
first title in eight years, further underlines their progress. As the team
gears up for the global stage, the lessons learned from these tournaments will
undoubtedly bolster their confidence and performance.
