USA dominates Germany 10-4 in World Juniors opener
The United States launched their 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship campaign with a 10-4 victory over Germany on Thursday at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.
USA - Germany 10-4
The U.S. wasted no time asserting control. At 8:07, James Hagens capitalized on a loose puck in front of a disoriented Pertuch to open the scoring. Although the goal underwent video review following a German coach’s challenge, it stood firm.
By 11:56, Hagens was at it again, setting up Perreault with a crisp pass for a laser shot over Pertuch’s glove, doubling the lead. The Germans had few answers, managing just six shots in the opening frame as Augustine turned aside their best effort with a timely blocker save.
The Americans extended their lead to 3-0 early in the second period, with Trevor Connelly converting his own rebound on a give-and-go with Cole Eiserman. Germany, however, showed resilience. Julius Sumpf scored on the power play at 25:00, slipping the puck under Augustine’s arm.
Minutes later, David Lewandowski intercepted a pass at center ice and fired a precision shot off the crossbar and in, cutting the U.S. lead to 3-2. The Germans' goal survived a U.S. coach’s challenge for potential offside, but they failed to capitalize on the ensuing delay-of-game power play.
The Americans quickly regained control. Hagens restored a two-goal cushion with his second of the game, while Brandon Svoboda and Perreault added late-period goals to push the lead to 6-2 entering the third.
The final frame saw the U.S. put the game well out of reach. Brodie Ziemer netted two goals, while Carey Terrance and Eiserman each contributed singles. German forwards Lenny Boos and Timo Ruckdäschel managed to add consolation markers, but the result was never in doubt.
Looking ahead, Germany faces a tough challenge against Finland on Friday, while the U.S. takes on Latvia on Saturday, aiming to continue their momentum toward a historic gold medal repeat.
