On a brisk Thursday evening at TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Finland edged Slovakia 5-3 in a thrilling quarter-final match. Aided by a dominant opening period and superb goaltending from Petteri Rimpinen, the Finns advanced to the semi-finals despite being outshot 36-18.
Finland stormed out of the gate, scoring three unanswered goals in the first 13 minutes. Jesse Nurmi, later named Player of the Match, opened the scoring just 70 seconds in, pouncing on a rebound after a Slovak defensive lapse. Minutes later, Nurmi set up Jesse Kiiskinen for a precise shot, doubling the lead.
The offensive onslaught continued with Kasper Halttunen's goal, a laser through traffic that ended Slovak goalie Alan Lendak’s night after just 13:03 of play. His replacement, Samuel Urban, faced immediate pressure but steadied the Slovak defense.
Slovakia began to push back in the second period, buoyed by a power play following Emil Pieniniemi’s major penalty for kneeing. Juraj Pekarcik capitalized with a pinpoint shot from the circle, narrowing the deficit to 3-1. However, Finland reestablished control when Rasmus Kumpulainen converted a net-front opportunity late in the period, restoring the three-goal cushion.
The Slovaks showed resilience in the third, led by goals from Robert Fedor and Dalibor Dvorsky. The latter’s tally at 16:04 brought Slovakia within one, energizing their bench. However, Nurmi sealed the win for Finland with a high-slot snipe off a clean faceoff win, making it 5-3 with two minutes left.
