The game showcased two contrasting halves. Finland dominated the first period, playing with confidence and aggression, while the U.S. struggled to find its rhythm. Jesse Kiiskinen opened the scoring on a power play, capitalizing on a precision pass from Emil Hemming to beat U.S. goalie Trey Augustine at 7:13. Moments later, James Hagens tied it up for the Americans after pouncing on a loose rebound. However, Finland quickly responded, with Tuomas Uronen scoring a highlight-reel goal to restore the lead at 2-1 heading into the first intermission.
The second period began much like the first, with Finland in control. Emil Pieniniemi extended the lead to 3-1, taking advantage of a defensive lapse by the U.S. However, momentum shifted midway through the period as the Americans found their footing. Brandon Svoboda’s fortunate deflection cut Finland’s lead to one, and Cole Hutson tied the game in the final seconds of the frame, setting the stage for a tense third period.
The final period was marked by cautious play as both teams tightened their defensive structures. The U.S. outshot Finland 11-5 in the period, but Finnish goalie Petteri Rimpinen delivered several clutch saves to keep his team in the game. Augustine responded in kind, denying Finland’s few quality chances, including a late effort by Benjamin Rautiainen.
The unlimited overtime period was dominated by the Americans, who relentlessly pressured the Finnish defense. Stiga’s game-winning goal came off a perfectly timed breakout pass from Zeev Buium, who found Stiga in full stride. Stiga calmly slotted the puck through Rimpinen’s pads, sparking a jubilant celebration among the American players and fans.
This victory marks the United States’ first-ever consecutive World Junior gold medals, solidifying their place as a powerhouse in international hockey. The Americans are now preparing to defend their title on home ice in Minnesota next year.
