Färjestad BK got a big win in the evenly played first leg of the Champions Hockey League (CHL) semifinal, defeating Sparta Prague 6-2 in front of a lively crowd of 11,682 at the O2 Arena. Färjestad takes a significant advantage into the return leg in Karlstad next week.
The Swedish side wasted no time taking the lead, scoring just 1:39 into the game. Viktor Lodin deflected a Magnus Nygren shot past Sparta’s goalie Josef Kořenář, setting the tone early. Sparta Prague responded quickly, capitalizing on a power play at 5:58, as Jani Lajunen buried a rebound to level the score.
Despite Sparta's early pressure, Färjestad gained momentum midway through the period. Oskar Steen restored Färjestad’s lead at 16:18, firing a one-timer from Joel Kellman’s feed, leaving Kořenář helpless.
The second period saw Färjestad continue to capitalize on their chances. At 25:58, Alexander Ljungkrantz finished a perfect two-on-one play with Lucas Forsell, firing a shot into the top corner for a 3-1 lead.
Sparta had opportunities to close the gap, especially during a mid-period power play, but Färjestad’s goaltender, Maxime Lagacé, stood tall. Lagacé made several key saves, frustrating the home team and keeping the scoreline intact as the second period ended.
Färjestad came out firing in the final frame. Just 45 seconds in, Marian Studenič intercepted a pass at the blue line and scored on a breakaway to make it 4-1. Sparta’s captain, Miroslav Forman, offered a brief glimmer of hope by scoring at 50:35, reducing the deficit to 5-2.
However, Färjestad immediately replied. Eleven seconds later, Joel Nyström blasted a shot from the blue line to restore the four-goal margin at 6-2. Despite Sparta’s efforts to rally, Färjestad’s defense and Lagacé held firm.
Maxime Lagacé was a standout performer, stopping 28 of 30 shots to anchor Färjestad’s victory. Oskar Steen led the offense with two goals, while Marian Studenič contributed with a goal and three assists.
With a 6-2 lead, Färjestad BK is in prime position to secure a spot in the CHL final. Sparta Prague faces an uphill battle, needing to win by at least five goals in Karlstad to advance. The decisive second leg takes place next week at Löfbergs Arena.
