ALBANY,NY- Czech native Patrik Elias's one-time deflection of Zach Parise's pass 45 seconds into overtime allowed the New Jersey Devils to beat the New York Rangers in both teams' exhibition opener before a hearty crowd of 9,420 at the Times Union Center.
The play was courtesy of a bad pass by Rangers defenseman Steve Emminger for winger Dale Weise that went right onto Parise's stick, who fired it to Elias who executed a perfect redirect past rookie goalie Cam Talbot who had no chance on the play.
If not for Talbot the game would have ended in the last minutes of regulation as Russian winger Ilya Kovalchuk found himself in the garden spot at the right wing faceoff circle and snapped off a blistering wrist shot, but Talbot entering his second professional season came out snatched with his left glove hand a seemingly sure game winner with 1;12 remaining.
"He has a little velocity on his shot " laughed Talbot who stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced entering the game at 11:19 of the second. "I did what I had to do came out took away the angles and had a clean look at it".
The Rangers hemmed in for most of the game because of the Devils vigorous forechecking tied the game with 4:21 left as young Canadian winger Dale Weise making a bid to make the big club starting off the play with a solid bodycheck on Swedish rookie Adam Larsson forcing a turnover and Russian winger Artem Anisimov shoveled the loose biscuit out in the slot area and Weise corralled the puck fired it in over a diving Jeff Frazee.
"I got to the front of the net and just made sure I got it (the puck) up," said Weise.
Defenseman Dan Girardi was impressed, "He showed great poise with the puck, didn't panic and played a very good game for us."
While Weise impressed one side the Devil's rookie rearguard Larsson did a good job of showing why he was a first round pick.
He helped the Devils establish a 1-0 lead with a perfect short pass to a wide open Czech Petr Sykora at the top of the RW faceoff circle turned and fired a bullet past Sweden's Henrik Lundqvist at 11:34.
In the first period on the powerplay Henrik Lundqvist who played the just the first period snatched a bullet with his glove hand ticked for the far side at 14:28.
Weise and Anisimov nearly scored at 6:23 in the second period with Anisimov backhander went wide and Weise was stopped by Frazee.
Talbot stoned Sykora, who split last season between the Czech Republic (CEL) and Belarus (KHL) and is making a bid to play again for the Devils, twice at the right side of the net, preventing the Devils from getting the second goal they were seeking and enjoying a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.
David Clarkson was turned away on wraparound attempt.
Rangers Swedish rookie defenseman Tim Erixon played a good game. The one-time first-round pick of Calgary, who played with Larsson last year in the Swedish Elite League with Skelleftea AIK.
