In Düsseldorf the two archrivals DEG Metro Stars and Kölner Haie met for a new edition of their derby. After five minutes Jeff Ulmer brought the home team in front when he stood alone in front of Haie goalie Danny aus den Birken. In the first period the guests had to take many penalties but Düsseldorfs power play was ineffective so that Charlie Stephens tied the game with a nice break while his team was short handed (14.). Only a minute later the DEG hat the chance in a 5 on 3 power play and this time they did it better and scored through a one-timer by Andrew Hedlund. The hosts kept the pressure high and one and a half minute before the first break Derek Dinger from the blue line increased the lead to two goals. In the middle period Düsseldorf was more active but missed all its opportunities while D'Aversa netted it one of only five Haie shots (12.) to bring hope back to the away fans. At the beginning of the last period Cologne tied the game early when Alexander Weiß scored in a power play. Now both teams concentrated on their defense until the Haie could turn the game around completely only 64 seconds before the end of the regular time. Felix Schütz who scored the game winning goal said after the game that it was his first derby between the two clubs and that it was something special for him. According to him the win was deserved after a weak beginning of his team.

In Hamburg the Freezers wanted to improve their starting situation for the playoffs while Hannover wanted to get closer to the pre playoff spots.
Early in the game Hamburg thought it had already scored but the goal could not be given as their had already been a call by the referee. On the other side Patrick Buzas put the puck into the goal to bring the Scorpions in front after five minutes when he get the rebound on his stick again. With a nice individual effort Thomas Oppenheimer rounded away goalie Dimitri Pätzold and tied the game just one and a half minutes later. In the middle period both teams did less and although Hannover had far more shots on goal there were not many big chances among them. In one of only six Freezers opportunities Thomas Oppenheimer was succesful with his second goal of the day and put the 2-1 on the board (32.). In the last period again a Freezers goal had to be taken back as the decisive pass came after a high stick. The final decision came two seconds before the end of the regular time when Jerome Flaake had no problems with his empty-netter.
In their last game the Straubing Tigers lost at home 5-6 after shootout against bottom team Hannover Scorpions after a 5-2 lead. Despite Christmas this event still seemed to be in the heads of the home team as Nürnberg, last in the DEL table, surprised them with three goals in the first period. The guests scored with almost every second shot on goal. French international Laurent Meunier in a 5 on 3 power play and Matt Hussey with a penalty shot attempt brought Straubing back into the game but a delayed penalty goal and a power play increased the lead of Nürnberg again to three. A goal by James Pollock early in the third period put a point behind the game. Straubing could only manage to make the result a bit more comfortable when the second goal of Matt Hussey brought the 3-6 final score.

In the duel between two neighbours in the table the fight for the tenth and therefore last pre-playoff spot was opened. Two early goals by Sinan Akdag and Patrick Hager for Krefeld were tied by another two early goals in the following period by Iserlohn players Robert Hock and Stefan Langwieder. In the last period Krefeld was even lucky not to lose the match in the regular time when Iserlohn had a plus in shots on goal (17-5). The decision came in the shootout where Tobias Wörle scored as second player for Iserlohn to draw level with Krefeld in the table. Now both teams have 39 points but because Krefeld has a better goal difference they defended the last pre-playoff spot.
In Munich the hosts were always one step ahead. Although Adam Mitchell tied the game (4.) for the DEL record champion only 14 second after the early lead of the EHC München through Klaus Kathan, the hosts kept the high pressure and did the 2-1 through George Kink (14.). When Stéphane Julien scored after almost eleven minutes in the second period for the Bavarians in a power play, Nick Dimitrakos needed only two minutes to get one back. When Brandon Dietrich scored the 4-2 early in the third period the game seemed to be over but Ken Megowan's goal five minutes prior to the end of the regular time made the game exciting again. The final decision came with an empty net goal by Julien eleven seconds before the sirene.
In another Bavarian derby between Augsburg and Ingolstadt the special teams had a lot to do and none of the five goals was scored with an even number of players on the ice. Ingolstadt did get its lead after only 24 seconds of the second period when it was in a power play and Michel Periard could score. When Derek Hahn used another power play situation in the middle of the third period to put the 0-2 on the board the game seemed to be decided in favour of the clear favourites who with a three-point-win could have become new league leaders. Augsburg which is traditionally a home power still found a way back into the match. Sergio Somma in a power play and Greg Moore when his team pulled the goalie out tied the game late in the last period. In the following overtime Sergio Somma with his second goal - this time in a 4 on 3 power play situation - won Augsburg the extra point.
