The Czech Republic got off to a good start when they defeated Denmark 7-0 in their first game at the World Juniors.
After showing that they could at least provide a bit of opposition in the first period against USA, Denmark had some small hope of a surprise against the Czech team. But the Czechs were way too good for the Danish team and cruised to an easy 7-0 win, outshooting them 44-12 along the way.
Denmark's goalie Sebastian Feuk made 15 saves to keep the score down to 1-0 in the first period. Tomas Hertl opened the scoring with a deflection that went in by the post and Feuk's pad.
Hertl added his second goal of the game early in the second period. Once again he was a bit lucky when his shot from the corner hit Feuk's pad to cross the goalline. "I’m very pleased to score my first two goals in the World Junior Championship, and I’m very happy that I could help my team. We knew we had to win and that’s what we did." Hertl told the IIHF after the game.
Radek Faksa gave the Czechs a three-goal lead halfway through the game and two goals within twenty seconds at the beginning of the third period killed all hope of Danish points in this game. The Czechs also added a power-play goal and short-handed goal late to make the final score 7-0.
Feuk was the best player for team Denmark with his 37 saves. With two goals, Hertl was given the award for the Czech team. The 19-year-old forward, who has been good with 15 points in the Extraliga so far, will be a big key player on this team that is missing perhaps its best forward, Martin Frk, who is still suffering from a concussion he suffered early in the season.
