31 Dec 2011 | Dennis Mende
In Friday's six DEL games the guest teams could have better saved their travel money. Eisbären Berlin was the only team to get an away point.

In the fight for a top-6 playoff spot the Hamburg Freezers received the Straubing Tigers. The game was as close as the standings could have let you imagine before. Despite an early goal by Patrick Traverse in the power play (8.) the hosts were not able to use this boost as Straubing tied the game only three minutes later through René Röthke. In the middle period the guests became stronger and even could turn the game around completely when Bruno St. Jacques scored after 28 minutes. The match should be decided in an exciting third period which saw a total of 27 shots and 7 goals. Three fast goals by the Freezers made them look like the well-deserved winner until the middle of the period when Carsen Germyn cut the lead to one for Straubing. But Hamburg now stayed calm and scored another three goals - one of them, the 6-3 - into the empty net.

In a close game between Iserlohn and Cologne only one of the ten goals fell while both teams were in full strength. It was the 1-2 by Alexander Weiß who brought the guests again in front after the goals of Matt Pettinger (for Cologne) and Michael Wolf (for Iserlohn) in the power play. Another two power play goals layed the base for the home win of the Roosters in the middle period. In the third period Michael Wolf seemed to make everything clear with the 4-2 after only 37 seconds but Cologne fought and came back through Philip Gogulla. Till the end Colton Fretter and Michael Hackert for Iserlohn and Jason Jaspers for Cologne made the 6-4 the final result.

In Krefeld came the end of Berlins winning streak of the last weeks. Despite a two-time lead in the first period the guests lay back 2-3 after the first two periods. TJ Mulock and Nicholas Angell had scored for Berlin while Herberts Vasiljevs, Richard Pavlikovsky and Francois Methot had scored for Krefeld. When Krefeld's Alexander Dück used a penalty attempt to bring his team with two goals in front in the middle of the third, the game seemed already over. But now Berlin tried everything to come back and the Penguins even very lucky the guests could only tie the game when they had an advantage in shots on goal of 19-4. Vincent Schlenker and Laurin Braun were succesfull for the capitals. After the overtime also didn't show a winner the decision was made in the shootout where Roland Verwey was the only scorer to secure the extra point for Krefeld.

In the game of the league leader and the third both teams were seen only rarely in full strenght. A total of 157 penalty minutes in 33 different penalties let the special teams work harder than thought before. Especially Ingolstadt seemed to try records by wasting power play opportunities. After the first period the match was still goalless despite 16 shots on goal for the guests and four power plays. When Ingolstadt finally did get its first goal in the middle of the second period in another power play, it did only take eleven seconds for Mannheim to tie the game shorthanded. Until the second break Michael Glumac could even turn the game around completely for the hosts. The third period began again with a power play goal by Ingolstadt answered by two late goals by Ken Megowan. The final decision came when Ronny Arendt put the puck into the empty net 74 seconds before the end of the third to bring a two point difference between Mannheim and second placed Eisbären Berlin.
For this special Bavarian derby EHC München moved into the Olympiahalle where they had an attendance of around 11.000 spectators against Augsburg - two times more than their average. Despite 14-5 shots on goal in the first period none of the teams could score until Stéphane Julien brought his team in front after 25 seconds of the second, followed by a shorthanded goal by Ulrich Maurer after a beautiful solo one and a half minutes later. When Martin Schymainski scored late in the second the game was more or less decided. Two early goals in the third period made the solid home win for München perfect.

In Düsseldorf the home team had little problems with bottom club Nürnberg Ice Tigers. A total of 40-19 shots on goal at the end of the game was as clear as the score - a 5-1. Only problem was the power play because the DEG Metro Stars only used one of seven opportunities. Late in the first period Jason Holland and Evan Kaufmann brought Düsseldorf in front. The shorthanded goal by Yan Stastny in the middle of the second for the guests cut the lead to one but only 80 seconds later Düsseldorf increased the lead again to two when Tyler Beechey scored. Patrick Reimer with the only power play goal of the day and Lynn Loyns with a succesful penatly attempt made the result clear in the third period.
